Student Kidnapped, Sexually Assaulted On Winthrop University Campus

WinthropROCK HILL, S.C. – A man is charged with kidnapping after a Winthrop University student says he sexually assaulted her on campus.

The student says she was assaulted Friday morning when she was walking back to Margaret Nance, a female residence hall. She says the man came up to her in the parking lot from behind and pulled out a weapon. She says he held the weapon, which remains unknown, to her body and told her to come with him.

He grabbed her arm and took her to a dark location near the residence hall before she started screaming, according to the police report. She said that’s when the man pushed the weapon against her, pulled her to an outside corner, and removed her clothes. She said then he raped her and took pictures of her during the sexual assault.

Police said the stories from witnesses matched the student’s description. Officials took the man into custody. The student was taken to PMC’s emergency room to receive a sexual assault exam.

The university sent out a statement to students Friday morning saying that an arrest was made around 3 a.m.

Officials say the suspect is not a Winthrop student. No names have been released.
