YORK, S.C. — Minutes after he was sent to the hospital with a head injury, a York man was arrested and charged Sunday after police say he hit a woman with a bush ax, then fought with the woman’s boyfriend who ran to her defense.

Steven Dixon was charged with Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature.

Sometime after midnight, police received a call from a woman saying a man was on top of her boyfriend wielding a knife, according to a York police report.

During the phone  call with the dispatcher, the woman said she got the knife away from the attacker, who began chasing her.  The boyfriend then began chasing the man and tackled him as police arrived.

The attacker suffered a swollen face and bleeding lip, while the boyfriend had a cut on his arm.

The boyfriend told officers that the man hit his girlfriend with a bush axe in the back of the head, although police said the woman didn’t suffer any cuts or bruising, after the man called his mother and girlfriend derogatory names.

When the boyfriend confronted the man, the report states, the man grabbed the bush ax and began swinging at him. The boyfriend picked up a plastic chair and hit the attacker, forcing him to drop the tool and a scuffle ensued.

Dixon insisted that he hadn’t done anything wrong and that he is “always the one to go to jail,” the report states.

York County court records show that Dixon was just charged last month with second-degree assault and battery.

Mr. Dixon was taken to Piedmont Medical Center, where doctors said he was drunk and had a closed head injury, the report states.
