Suspect Shot in Chase Has Been Jailed After Hospital Release

CMPD Officers No ChargesA man who led CMPD officers on a 45-mile chase and was shot Aug. 10 has been jailed on 23 charges after he was released from the hospital this week.

Rodolfo Joel Ulloa-Paz, 28, had pointed a gun at officers during the end of the chase on N.C. 16, which Catawba County’s district attorney said justifies officers shooting at him.

Ulloa-Paz had refused to get down and drop his gun despite commands from officers to do so. He was then shot multiple times, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Chief Kerr Putney at a news conference.

Ulloa-Paz was in the Mecklenburg County jail Saturday for charges that included conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, four counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied conveyance in operation, robbery with a dangerous weapon,  three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, two counts of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and one count each of second-degree arson and felony flee to elude police.

Alan Israel Chavez-Cruz, 22, of Charlotte, was a second suspect in the case. He is still jailed on 14 similar charges.

Erik Lopez, 19, a third suspect not involved in the chase, was jailed on 12 charges on Saturday.

The chase started after officers tried to stop a red pickup truck close Monroe Road thatwas  connected with multiple shootings but the truck sped away, according to Putney.

Later during the same morning, police responded to a call and found two victims suffering from minor injuries after a shooting on East W.T. Harris Boulevard near Brook Canyon Drive, according to Putney. A carjacking had been attempted and the victims had been hit with bird shot, Putney said.

Police saw the same red pickup close by and on fire, Putney said. The suspects let the truck and attempted to steal other vehicles at gunpoint.
