Teen Accused of Shooting Cornelius Officer Involved in Prior Calls

7648806_GPolice said they received two calls last year about the teenager accused of shooting an officer in the stomach this weekend.

16-year-old Greyson Auguste-Russell Ferrell shot officer Lt. James Quattlebaum in the abdomen Saturday morning as Quattlebaum was responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Quattlebaum was taken to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment and is expected to fully recover, according to Mayor Chuck Travis.

Ferrell was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, possession of a handgun by a minor, possession of marijuana up to half an ounce, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Before a Monday news conference, police had said they responded to a prior domestic disturbance call at Ferrell’s home on Dec. 2, 2014. At that time, Teresa Ferrell, the teen’s mother, had reported her son spitting on her. She did not press charges, according to the police report.

Also stated in the report was that Teresa Ferrell told police the teenager had broken her ribs a few weeks prior but she didn’t notify police. Teresa also said she would lie awake wondering at night if her son would kill her, the report said.

Teresa Ferrell had also reported her son early in 2014 under concerns he was possibly driving under the influence of alcohol, the incident report from that time said. The mother had said she didn’t want to report the car as stolen and officers did not come to the home, the report said.

Greyson Ferrell’s Facebook wall appeared to show him posting hostile comments about police officers in April, including several posts reading “F— the police.”

Ferrell had also posted on Facebook about the shooting and killing of a black man by a cop last month with hateful comments toward law enforcement.

Quattlebaum was shot after he and other officers were responding to a call regarding domestic disturbance at a home located in the 19400 bloc of Coachman’s Trace.

Ferrell shot Quattlebaum in the stomach and officers returned fire and hit Ferrell at least once, but Ferrell was wearing a bulletproof vest and wasn’t injured seriously.

According to Police Chief Bence Hoyle, it is believed by investigators that Ferrell’s intent was to ambush Quattlebaum.

Of Cornelius Police Department’s 60 officers, Quattlebaum was the first to have been shot while on duty.
