Teen Charged in Double Homicide Appears in Court

AR-160539981The Gastonia teenager who is accused in the murders of two people was seen in court Monday morning in Gaston County.

Jose Adan Lopez Rios, 17, of Rogers Avenue, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Rios has been in jail since Friday for the deaths of Derreck Monique Brice, 33, and his cousin, Lashea Jeanine Coleman, 26. Coleman had cerebral palsy.

District Court Judge James Jackson decided Rios should be assigned a court-appointed attorney before the consideration of bond.

Rios is set to appear again on Wednesday.

Jackson asked Rios if he was in school and Rios replied, “Ashbrook.” But according to a spokesman for the school, Rios hasn’t been enrolled there since Sept. 2014.

A suspected motive in the double homicide hasn’t been reported by police.
