CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. – A teenager is accused of shooting his mother and leaving her for dead in the front yard, according to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 6500 block of Old Shelby Road.

Investigators say an off-duty officer noticed the Sherry Rhoney face-down in the grass, covered in blood.

Rhoney’s 17-year-old son Daniel and his girlfriend, 16-year-old Elizabeth Fowler, have been charged with attempted murder.

Police say Daniel Rhoney and Fowler, who were home at the time, first told investigators they didn’t know what happened.

Officers returned to arrest the teens after Sherry briefly woke up in the hospital and told police and doctors he shot her.

Rhoney is being held on a $1 million bond. Fowler’s bond has been set for $500,000.
