Union County Man Attempts Hiring Inmates to Kill Murder Case Witness

handcuffsA man in Union County, who is already in jail and previously accused of two murders, was charged with criminal solicitation for attempting to pay two fellow inmates to murder a witness in his upcoming trial, officials say.

Eddie Clyde Helms, 61, has been contained in the Union County Jail since August 2014 for being charged with two murders 24 years apart. The first was the murder of Charles Ronald Godwin in August 2012 and before that the killing of John Terow Griffin III from Peachland, N.C. in a November 1988 open murder case.

Jealous and anger were the main reasons for both murders, according to investigators.

Helms was served solicitation charges by officials on Wednesday for hiring the two inmates to attempt the killing. Police have not said how they knew about the attempted crime.

Helms is held without bond at the jail.
