CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have arrested a man they say assaulted a woman after she found him burglarizing her apartment.

Jamar Edward McCullough, 20, is charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony breaking and entering, possession of a stolen handgun and resisting arrest.

Police said a woman returned to her apartment just after 3 p.m. Friday and found McCullough, who was armed, attempting to steal items from the home. Officers said a struggle ensured over the weapon, and when the woman got control of the gun, McCullough began assaulting her.

The woman fled the apartment and yelled for assistance. Police said McCullough then took her cellphone and fled on foot.

Several of the woman’s neighbors came to assist her and some attempted to chase the suspect but they were unable to catch him.

Police said they found McCullough and arrested him a few blocks from the apartment.

McCullough, who has a lengthy arrest record, is being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail.
