The driver of an SUV that was involved in a fatal accident Sunday morning has been arrested after the driver in the car she hit died.
According to police, Lasonya Denise Thompson, 38, crossed the center line on Mallard Creek Road near Sawgrass Ridge Place and struck a Saturn ION head on. The crash happened around 11:30am Sunday morning. Police have not said what may have caused Thompson to drive into the oncoming lane.
Both cars ended up flipping during the crash. The driver, Zaida Esther Concepcion, 39, and the passengers of the Saturn had to be cut out of the car. Concepcion was taken to CMC University and was pronounced dead. Two passengers in the car were airlifted to CMC Main with life threatening injuries.
According to police, there were children in the SUV driven by Thompson. They only received minor injuries.
Thompson is being charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and driving with no liability insurance. Sunday night she was listed as being in the Mecklenburg County Jail under a $10,5000 bond.
