Catawba woman has been charged with embezzling money from a medical group in eastern Lincoln following an almost two-month investigation.

Donna Marie Varin, 50, was charged for embezzlement of over $100,000 between 2007 and 2011, according to sheriff’s Detective Richard Calhoun, while she worked as bookkeeper at North State Medical Group in Denver, N.C.

According to records, Varin was given cash receipts that she was to then deposit in the bank. Calhoun said the deposits made were for largely smaller amounts than the amount the practice earned.

$128,000 was the total embezzled from the cash deposits, records show. An additional $20,000 was also embezzled by Varin through false payroll deductions on health and supplemental insurance, Calhoun said.

Varin has been released after posting her $30,000 bail.
